Interestingly enough, “Communion”, “The Lord’s Supper” has also been called the “Agape Meal”. Agape is one of the Greek words translated as “love” in the Scriptures. There is no more fitting a time to celebrate the great sacrifice in love that Jesus made for each of us than around the family table at Thanksgiving.
We celebrate Thanksgiving each and every Sunday at LifePoint Christian Church. It is actually a part of each service. Often, we even celebrate Thanksgiving when we get together in small groups. As follower’s of Jesus, we have so much to be thankful for.
As we gather around the table on this Thanksgiving day, please consider taking communion before the meal and giving thanks to Jesus who willingly walked to and died on the cross so that we might live a new life in Him. His sacrifice changed our world and our destiny.
John 6:35 (TNIV)
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (TNIV)
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.Mark 14:22-25 (TNIV)
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.” 23 Then he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.24 “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Today, we will start a new tradition in OUR family for Thanksgiving…..the tradition of giving thanks to the one who truly IS the bread of Life…..Jesus. May your day be filled with the thankfulness for God’s blessing, with fun and with family and the one’s you love. Happy Thanksgiving!
