A little girl and her father were hiking in the mountains. The path up the mountain started to narrow and soon it was a pretty steep drop down so the father took his daughters hand and said, “Sweetheart, hold my hand so that you don’t fall off the path.” The little girl said: “No, Dad. YOU hold MY hand.” “What’s the difference?” Asked the puzzled father. “There’s a big difference,” replied the little girl. “If I hold your hand and something happens to me, chances are that I may let your hand go. But if you hold my hand, I know for sure that no matter what happens, you will never let my hand go.”
In any relationship, the essence of trust is not in its BIND, but in its BOND. So hold the hand of the person whom you love rather than expecting them to hold yours. I believe that Jesus wants to hold our hand–He won’t let go. Unfortunately at times we pull away, don’t we?
How often has someone lost trust in us? At times like these, it is important to recall when we have lost trust in someone else. Trust takes years to build, but only seconds to shatter. And even then, usually, something was lost in the process that we may never gain back.
We should recognize the importance of trust in our lives because with trust we have a peace with those around us. I heard it said that trust is like a mirror, once it’s BROKEN you can never look at it the same again. Just a thought to ponder.
Isaiah 26:3-4 (TNIV)
3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. 4 Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal.
Let’s tie up all this teaching about trust. Very often we put our trust in the wrong things. We trust money, we trust prestige, we trust sports figures, actors and musicians–we trust pleasure. We trust in material things to bring us fulfillment. These things are not wrong in their place. But, for true fulfillment in life, there is one trust that we must develop and nurture.–TRUSTING GOD.
God tells us to take refuge in Him. His love surrounds those who trust Him.
Isaiah 57:13 (TNIV)
When you cry out for help, let your collection of idols save you! The wind will carry all of them off, a mere breath will blow them away. But whoever takes refuge in me will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain.”
Psalms 32:10-11 (TNIV)
10 Many are the woes of the wicked, but the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds those who trust in him. 11 Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart!Proverbs 16:20 (TNIV)
Those who give heed to instruction prosper, and blessed are those who trust in the Lord.
As the Lord extends His hand to you, may you take it in yours and never let go!
