Why is it that when everything in life is going well…..we don’t need anybody else….”we can stand on our own”? But when we are hurting, in emotional pain, or physical pain…..we are in deep need of others. Indeed…..we often are in deep need of Jesus. Jesus performed many miracles and many healings. People flocked to him in droves! The healing that we need most we often lay aside, we can’t see it with our eyes and therefore we quickly forget. What we need most and what, I believe we need every day is spiritual healing. A spiritual healing that only Jesus can provide.
Mark 6:53-56 (TNIV)
53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went–into villages, towns or countryside–they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
It’s interesting to me that I know people that have seen miracles in their life ……..yet those miracles are soon forgotten (and I have done this too!). Why is that? It’s because miracles don’t produce faith. They only produce a temporary excitement. We may see Jesus as the great healer….but do we really see him for WHO HE IS……..indeed, our Savior, God in the flesh!
You may seek Jesus to learn from His wisdom and to learn valuable lessons in life. You may seek Jesus to find relief from pain in your life……but DON”T MISS HIS PRIMARY MESSAGE. Jesus wants to heal your soul! Don’t seek to simply prolong your life on this earth……seek to secure eternal life with God the father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit all wrapped up into one.
I was sharing the beauty and life changing knowledge of the Beatitudes one day with a friend who doesn’t follow Jesus. He was deeply interested in hearing about these attitudes in life that Jesus tells us will result in blessings. Indeed, he seemed really to understand and I saw some enthusiasm in his eyes. He asked questions and was keenly interested in how a change of attitude in many areas can change and bless your life. Them he asked me, “Jan, what if I apply this stuff but still don’t believe in Jesus?”. Well, all I could say is, “You are missing the point. These are great ‘self-helps’, true, but they are not the core of Jesus’ message.” Well, my friend is, I believe, still wandering about in life, still confused about why things aren’t falling into place and most of all…….he simply missed the point about the most important healing in our life…..the spiritual healing of salvation.
It is only when we fully understand the real Jesus that we can we appreciate how he can truly change our lives. Jesus wants to not only heal your body….but He wants to heal your soul.
